How to Build a Values-Driven Workshop (That Actually Runs Better)

What happens when your values show up in every quote, job, and handover? You build a business that runs better.
Most fabricators would say they care about quality, teamwork, and reliability. But saying it and living it are two very different things.
If your values don’t show up in how you quote, deliver, or handle issues on the floor, they’re just words.
This post is about how to make sure they actually shape your business.
1. Know What You Stand For
Before you ask your team to live the values, you need to define them. Not generic words - real standards that matter.
Instead of this:
- Quality
- Integrity
- Teamwork
Try this:
- We never ship work we wouldn’t be happy to pay for ourselves.
- We own our mistakes and fix them fast.
- We help each other hit deadlines.
Real values are behaviours, not buzzwords. If they don’t guide action, they don’t belong.
2. Start From the Top
Values don’t come from posters - they come from people. Especially the ones in charge.
If you say you care about consistency, but make pricing calls on the fly, your team sees that. If you preach quality, but let rushed jobs slide, they see that too.
Leadership sets the tone. And that tone becomes the standard.
3. Make Them Part of How You Work
Values don’t mean much if they only show up in team meetings or onboarding manuals.
They should shape:
- How you quote and price
- How you onboard new hires
- How you check work before it ships
- How you give feedback (and who gets promoted)
Think of your values like a filter. Every decision and action should pass through them.
4. Share the Why (And Keep Sharing It)
If you want buy-in, you need to explain why these values matter.
"We check everything before it leaves because customers don’t forgive sloppy work." "We don’t blame-shift because we rely on each other to deliver."
People can follow rules - but they’ll believe in values. Especially when they see the impact.
5. Find Your Internal Champions
There are always team members who naturally live the values. They don’t need convincing - they already lead by example.
Lift them up. Let them share the why. Make them part of onboarding, mentoring, or running toolbox talks.
Culture doesn’t just come from the top. It spreads through champions.
6. Reward It When You See It
Call it out when someone lives the values:
- A team member staying late to help another finish a job
- Someone taking ownership of a mistake and fixing it quickly
- A clean, well-prepared handover for the next shift
Don’t let good culture go unnoticed. What gets recognised gets repeated.
